Brazil, by means of its Armed Forces, has gained recognition in the international scenario, as part of the peacekeeping forces legitimately acting on behalf of the UN in foreign countries. In the case of Haiti, our role has been even more important because we have taken the leadership of the peacekeeping forces in that territory, reason for pride for our Armed Forces, but also reason for constant worry, not only for the physical integrity of our compatriots but also for the responsibility weighting on their shoulders.

Our troops face daily conflicts resulting from a completely deteriorated political and social situation. Even a humanitarian action such as the distribution of food can be become a disturbance with unforeseeable consequences. In addition, criminal groups act infiltrated in the poor population, further hampering the actions of the law enforcement officials.

In this context that sometimes is similar to that of Brazilian slums, our peace force has had an exemplary performance and the non-lethal weapons have been fundamental for the success of the mission.

The Brazilian participation in the UN peacekeeping operations represents a military experience of the utmost importance for the Armed Forces, especially when there is the perspective of employment of military troops in Law and Order Guarantee Operations.

Both for peacekeeping operation and GLO operations the non-lethal weapons are the most adequate means so that action is effective and in respect with human rights, praised by the UN and desired by the Brazilian society.
