The ostensive patrol is an important dissuading factor for criminal action and especially for the practice of petty crimes. In addition, the presence of the police representing the State transmits to the citizen the desired feeling of security. Evidently, a policeman holding a machine gun scares more than tranquilizes the citizen.
Non-lethal weapons such as pepper spray and "rubber bullets" should be used in the ostensive patrol, because they will enable prompt police action if required, without putting innocent bystanders on the location in danger.
