Until December 27th, 2006, when the Logistic Department of the Brazilian Army published Directive 20, which allowed the purchase of non-lethal equipment by private security companies and organic security services, private companies were prohibited from acquiring this type of product.

After the Directive, they began to have this right, as long as they follow the requirements of the Federal Police Department (DPF), agency that controls the sector. The main request of the DPF is the training of the security officers in the correct utilization of the non-lethal weapons and ammunitions.

The main benefits for the adoption of non-lethal weapons by private security are the following:

It offers the security officers an alternative to deal with most situations of conflict, without endangering their physical integrity and the life of innocent bystanders eventually present on the scene of operations. In addition, such alternative avoids law suits for the excessive use of force.

It offers the companies the possibility of making a difference in its performance, standing out for the utilization of modern security instruments.

Society feels safer since non-lethal weapons represent a safe alternative for the defense of third parties' property with efficiency and respect to human rights, especially in situations like residential condominiums, shopping centers, banks and other indoor environments.
